If you are an adventurist, then this blog post is for you. If you’re here just to learn something new, this blog post is also for you. Welcome, dear reader. This blog post is a direct experience from the team behind Tourist in MK.

Nestled in the heart of North Macedonia, Pelisterski Oci, or the Large Lake, offers one of the most breathtaking hiking experiences in the Balkans. Known for its pristine beauty and serene landscapes, this destination is perfect for both seasoned hikers and nature enthusiasts. The journey to the lake, which spans from 3 and a half to 6 hours depending on the group, is as rewarding as the destination itself, with varied terrain and a rich tapestry of flora and fauna.

The Journey Begins: A Sunrise Hike to Pelisterski Oci – Large Lake

Our adventure begins at the crack of dawn, setting off for a hike to the stunning Pelisterski Oci, also known as the Large Lake. As the first rays of sunlight filter through the morning mist, our journey starts at approximately 7 am. In hindsight, starting at 6 am might be even better, especially on sunny days, as a significant portion of the path lacks tree cover and shade, presenting a challenging trek under the midday sun.

Packing Essentials

Before we dive into the details of the hike, let’s discuss the essentials you should pack:

  1. Hiking backpack
  2. Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers
  3. 2 Pairs of long pants
  4. Two t-shirts and two long-sleeve shirts
  5. A warm jacket (but not a heavy winter one)
  6. Hat
  7. Sunglasses
  8. SPF 50+ sunscreen
  9. Insect repellent
  10. Knife (for safety as you’re venturing into the wild)
  11. Water (3-4 bottles or 2 large thermoses)
  12. Snacks (protein bars, electrolytes, dates, and 7-10 sandwiches)
  13. Toilet paper and alcohol disinfectant
  14. Probiotics and activated charcoal for stomach issues
  15. Paracetamol or other fever medicine
  16. Sleeping bag

Into the Forest: Entering Pelister Mountain’s Wilderness

The initial phase of the trail leads you into a dense forest, where the buzzing of insects is a constant companion. Equipped properly, you won’t have any issues. This part of the journey is particularly rewarding, as the forest is teeming with wild strawberries and blueberries. However, if you have a sensitive stomach, it’s best to gather these treats to take home. You’ll also find various herbal teas such as St. John’s wort, breckland thyme, and chamomile. Bring a small bag to collect some for later. Along this stretch, you will also come across two taps with natural water. While it may seem tempting, it’s safer to rely on the water you brought with you.

Climbing Higher

After about halfway, the forest gives way to the bare, rugged beauty of higher altitudes. Here, the path is devoid of trees, leaving you exposed to the elements.

Approaching the Lake

Exiting the woods, an hour’s walk brings you to clear signs leading towards the Large Lake. The sound of the nearby river accompanies you, and you will even cross it at one point. Upon reaching the final destination, prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking view of the lake. A mountain home nearby offers lodging for 400 denars per person. The hospitable employee there will greet you warmly with fresh herbal tea.

The lake, nestled in the embrace of towering mountains, offers a serene spot for relaxation. You can take a dip in the lake if the weather is calm, though the frequent winds mean you should have a winter hat handy.

Important Considerations

Those with sensitive digestive systems or prone to altitude sickness should reconsider this trek. The high altitude can exacerbate digestive issues, leading to diarrhea or vomiting. Additionally, those with anemia need to be cautious due to the lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. For more information on the effects of high altitude on health, check with your doctor!

In case you’re unable to return to Bitola on foot, a truck is available to take you back to town. However, if others are staying in the mountain home, the truck might not leave until the next day. The drive is an adventure in itself, with a rocky, winding road that promises a thrilling 3-hour journey back to civilization. In our experience, when one of our group mates was affected by altitude sickness and needed urgent assistance, we were fortunate to encounter two kind-hearted individuals who offered to drive them back to town in their car. This act of kindness exemplifies the warmth and hospitality of the people in this region.
